***NEW FIELD TRIP ADDED***
Dr. Kent Sundell, Casper College Geology Department, will be our Coordinator & Guide this exciting field trip:
This field trip will go to the beautifully exposed badlands out crops between Douglas and Orin, Wyoming to look at a variety of “Ancestral North Platte”) stream systems, preserved as resistant sandstone hoodoos, mesas, canyons, and cliffs all 100% exposed by erosion. We will examine contacts, unconformities, incised paleovalleys, and their laterally continuous siltstone and mudstone overbank deposits. The ancestral stream channel forms are observed throughout the 1,000’ thick latest Eocene (Chadronian), and Oligocene (Orellan and Whitneyan NALMA ages) White River Formation. A field example of how to locate a buried sandstone stream channel within a sea of mudstone using surficial resistivity geophysics will also be examined.
Space is limited – $50.00/person
